Kaibab National Forest

Surrounding Grand Canyon National Park, Kaibab National Forest features high plateaus, alpine meadows, and ponderosa pines—perfect for scenic drives, hiking, and dispersed camping.

The Kaibab National Forest spans more than 1.6 million acres in northern Arizona and surrounds the Grand Canyon on both the North and South Rims. This forest is defined by dramatic elevation changes, diverse ecosystems, and direct access to one of the most iconic landscapes in the world.

Divided into three main districts—the North Kaibab, Tusayan, and Williams Ranger Districts—Kaibab offers everything from high alpine forests and meadows to ponderosa pine plateaus and piñon-juniper woodlands. Elevations range from 5,500 feet to over 10,400 feet at Freeman Mountain, providing a wide range of climates and habitats.

The North Kaibab District is the only part of the national forest north of the Grand Canyon and is known for its cool summers, vast meadows, and towering spruce-fir forests. The South Rim area features the Tusayan and Williams Districts with pine forests, lava fields, and historic sites, including access to the Arizona Trail and scenic drives along Highway 180 and Route 64.

Kaibab is home to a variety of wildlife including elk, mule deer, turkeys, mountain lions, and California condors. In spring and summer, wildflowers brighten the meadows, and fall brings brilliant foliage to the aspen groves.

Visitors come to Kaibab for hiking, camping, wildlife photography, mountain biking, backpacking, and stargazing. Dispersed camping opportunities abound, especially in areas with spectacular canyon views and peaceful forest seclusion just outside Grand Canyon National Park.
