Sitgreaves National Forest

Sitgreaves National Forest offers cool pine forests, clear lakes, and abundant wildlife across Arizona’s high country—ideal for camping, hiking, and outdoor adventures.

Part of: Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

The Sitgreaves National Forest is a land of cool pine forests, sparkling lakes, and lush meadows, stretching across the high country of eastern Arizona. Forming the western half of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Sitgreaves is known for its lush forests of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and quaking aspen, as well as its proximity to the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains.

Elevations range from 5,000 to over 9,000 feet, offering cool summer retreats and snowy winter escapes. The region is rich in water features, including 11 lakes and 680 miles of rivers and streams, many of which are stocked with trout and support thriving ecosystems.

Popular recreation areas include Woods Canyon Lake, Willow Springs Lake, Black Canyon, and Forest Roads 300 and 124, where visitors can find dispersed camping, wildlife watching, and incredible views from Rim overlooks. In the summer, wildflowers blanket the forest floor, while fall brings vivid displays of yellow and orange in aspen groves.

Wildlife is abundant, with frequent sightings of wild turkeys, elk, deer, black bears, hawks, and foxes—and lucky visitors may even spot wild horses roaming freely in certain areas near Heber-Overgaard. A wide network of trails and forest roads supports hiking, horseback riding, biking, and OHV exploration, while backcountry lakes offer serene paddling and fishing spots.
