INSTRUCTIONS:

Prepare the Grill/Campfire: Preheat the grill to medium heat or set up a campfire with a grate for cooking.

  • Prepare the Apple Filling: Cut a 12 x 18-inch sheet of nonstick foil. Place the sliced apple on the foil and top with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, dried cranberries or raisins (if using), and chopped walnuts (optional).

Option to Add Crisp Topping (Optional): In a small bowl, combine oats, flour, and brown sugar. Add butter and mix with your fingers until the mixture forms a crumbly texture. Sprinkle the oat topping over the apple mixture before wrapping it up.

Wrap the Packet: Fold the foil into a secure packet, leaving space for heat expansion.

Cook the Packet: Place the foil packet on the grill or campfire grate. Cover and cook for about 15-20 minutes, checking the apples for tenderness. If cooking over a campfire, it may take a bit longer (15-20 minutes).

Check for Doneness: Carefully open one packet (watch out for hot steam) and check if the apples are tender. If done, remove all packets. If not, cook for another 5-10 minutes, checking again.

Serve: When ready, carefully remove the packet from the heat. Stir the apples gently, as there will be juices at the bottom of the packet. Serve the apple pie directly in the packet or spoon out into bowls. If using the crisp topping, the oats should be golden and crumbly.

Enjoy your warm, delicious apple dessert either as a simple apple pie packet or with a crispy, oat topping for a fun, campfire-inspired apple crisp!
