Coconino National Forest: Happy Jack

Happy Jack, located in the Mogollon Rim Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest, offers a peaceful escape for dispersed camping. With its cooler summer temperatures, towering pines, and diverse wildlife, it’s a perfect destination for outdoor exploration and relaxation.

The Happy Jack area, nestled within the scenic Mogollon Rim Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest, is a haven for dispersed camping. Towering ponderosa pines, Gambel oaks, and junipers create a picturesque, shaded landscape teeming with wildlife. Visitors may encounter elk, mule deer, smaller mammals such as tree squirrels and chipmunks, as well as a variety of birds, including red-tailed hawks, woodpeckers, and the vibrant Steller’s jays.

Situated at elevations between 6,800 and 7,200 feet, this forested region offers a refreshing escape from the sweltering summer heat of the Phoenix Valley. The cooler temperatures and serene environment make it an ideal retreat during the warmer months.

The diverse forest landscape invites exploration through hiking, wildlife observation, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Campers can expect a rustic experience suitable for tents and small campers, where nature takes center stage.

When camping in the Happy Jack dispersed areas, be prepared for potential noise disruptions from Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs). Many Forest Service roads and trails in this region are popular with OHV enthusiasts, and their sounds may carry through the forest, particularly during weekends and holidays.

Access to these dispersed camping spots is available via Forest Service Roads 211, 81, 93, 229 and 294, each offering its own unique charm for outdoor exploration.

For those that have interest in non-primitive camping there is Pinegrove Campground: Situated around 12 miles northeast of Happy Jack, Pinegrove Campground is close to Mormon Lake and offers camping sites among ponderosa pine trees. It provides amenities such as picnic tables, fire pits, and vault toilets.
