Waves, Wind, and Wild Burros: A Windy Day at Alamo Lake

Our day trip to Alamo Lake Wildlife Area was anything but ordinary. As we arrived and set up camp, strong desert winds picked up, sweeping across the lake with surprising force. The result? Waves that looked and sounded like the ocean—right in the heart of the Arizona desert.
Despite the gusty conditions, it was a day full of beauty. Birds called out, boats cut across the windblown water, and the surrounding landscape felt alive and powerful. Later in the day, we ventured out on a hike into the hills—and caught sight of wild burros, peacefully grazing and wandering across the rugged terrain.
It was a reminder of why we camp: to witness nature's mood swings and surprises, and to reconnect with the wild, even on a windy day.
