The junction of FR 171 (Old Rim Road) and Young Road (FR 512) is a hidden gem along the Mogollon Rim in the Sitgreaves National Forest, offering a rustic and scenic escape into Arizona’s cool high country. This lesser-traveled route provides a quieter, more remote alternative to FR 300, with easy access to rim views, wildlife corridors, and dispersed campsites tucked among the ponderosa pines.

FR 171 traces part of the original rim route before modern highways replaced it, winding through forested ridges, meadows, and primitive trail access. Young Road (FR 512) heads south toward the historic pioneer town of Young, Arizona, offering an off-grid route into more remote sections of the forest.

While this area remains wild and uncrowded, it’s still within convenient reach of popular recreation spots. Just about 12 miles east, you’ll find Willow Springs Lake, a beautiful high-elevation reservoir ideal for trout fishing, kayaking, and picnicking. The lake is regularly stocked and offers easy shoreline access, making it a great destination for a day trip or an add-on to your camping adventure along FR 171.

Dispersed camping is plentiful throughout this region, with scenic pullouts and forest clearings perfect for tents, trailers, and RVs. You’ll find solitude, stargazing, and shaded campsites all along FR 171 and Young Road—ideal for those who want a more off-the-grid experience than developed campgrounds provide.

Wildlife sightings are common, including elk, deer, wild turkeys, hawks, and the occasional black bear. With its minimal traffic, forest serenity, and rim-edge charm, this area offers an unforgettable retreat for nature lovers, overlanders, and anyone seeking Arizona’s wild side.

Services: Fuel, groceries, and supplies available in Forest Lakes (25 miles) or Payson (50 miles).
