Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is a breathtaking geological wonder nestled in a hidden valley near Payson, Arizona. It is home to the largest known natural travertine bridge in the world, towering 183 feet high and spanning 150 feet across Pine Creek. Formed by thousands of years of mineral deposits, this natural marvel offers a stunning blend of unique geology and lush greenery.


The park features diverse trails that allow visitors to experience its remarkable beauty up close. Trails such as the Anna Mae Trail and Gowan Trail lead to stunning viewpoints and down to the creek bed, where you can marvel at the bridge’s sheer size and intricate formations. The Pine Creek Trail follows a rocky creek bed, showcasing beautiful flora and fauna along the way.


Wildlife enthusiasts may spot animals such as mule deer, javelina, and various species of birds. The park’s surroundings are characterized by towering Ponderosa pines, alligator junipers, and vibrant wildflowers during spring.

  • Summer (June to August): Temperatures can be quite hot, but early morning visits are possible. The park may close during monsoon season due to flash flood risks.

  • Winter (December to February): Cooler weather makes hiking pleasant, though some areas may be icy after storms.

  • No camping is allowed inside the state park, camping available nearby in the Tonto National Forest.

  • Admission: Adults (14+) $10 / Youth (7–13) $5 / Children 6 and under free (2026)

  • Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; last entry 4:00 PM; trails close one hour before park closes (2026)

  • Dogs are not allowed on hiking trails; recreational drones prohibited

Directions

From Phoenix, AZ: Take AZ-87 North (Beeline Highway) through Mesa, Fountain Hills, and Payson. Continue north approximately 10 miles past Payson and turn onto Forest Road 583A / Tonto Natural Bridge Road. Follow the posted signs to the park entrance. Fill up on fuel and water before leaving Payson — services are limited beyond that point. (~100 miles, ~1 hour 45 minutes)


From Payson: Head north on AZ-87 approximately 10 miles. Turn left onto Tonto Natural Bridge Road / FR 583A and follow signs to the park.
