Glen Canyon

National Recreation Area

Location & Access

The recreation area extends along the Colorado River, with major access points in Page, Arizona, and near Halls Crossing and Bullfrog in Utah. The Carl Hayden Visitor Center near Glen Canyon Dam provides orientation, exhibits, and views of Lake Powell.

Natural Features

The area features dramatic red rock canyons, mesas, arches, and the vast waters of Lake Powell, created by the construction of Glen Canyon Dam. Other highlights include Rainbow Bridge National Monument and Escalante canyons.

Wildlife & Plants

Habitats range from desert scrublands to riparian zones. Wildlife includes bighorn sheep, coyotes, lizards, and numerous bird species. Lake Powell attracts waterfowl, herons, and ospreys. Desert vegetation includes creosote bush, cactus, and yucca.

Cultural & Historical Significance

The region preserves thousands of archaeological sites from Ancestral Puebloan cultures, including cliff dwellings and rock art. Glen Canyon Dam, completed in 1966, transformed the region, creating Lake Powell and sparking ongoing debates about water management and conservation.

Recreation & Visitor Information

Lake Powell is the centerpiece of recreation, offering boating, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. Houseboat rentals and marinas provide extended stay options. Hiking opportunities include canyons, overlooks, and Rainbow Bridge. Camping, scenic drives, and ranger-led programs are available throughout the recreation area.

Conservation & Management

Designated as a National Recreation Area in 1972, Glen Canyon is managed by the National Park Service. Management balances recreational use with preservation of archaeological sites, water resources, and fragile desert ecosystems.
