How to Identify
Desert Hackberry is a common shrub of the lower Sonoran Desert that rewards the observer who learns its distinctive combination of features — the zigzag branching pattern, paired thorns, and bright orange berries make it one of the more identifiable desert shrubs once you know what to look for.
Size and Form: More shrub than tree — a slow-growing, long-lived, densely branched shrub typically reaching 4 to 8 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide. Adults are often wider than tall. The plant forms dense impenetrable thickets where conditions allow — multiple stems growing from the base creating cover used extensively by birds, small mammals, and reptiles.
Branching pattern: One of the most distinctive identification features — the branches grow in a zigzag pattern, each segment angling slightly from the previous one. Single or paired thorns occur at the nodes along the zigzag stems. The combination of zigzag branching and paired thorns is diagnostic.
Leaves: Small, dull green, oval to elliptical with coarsely toothed margins — 1/2 to 1 inch long. Semi-evergreen depending on temperature and moisture availability. The leaf surface has a slightly rough texture. Leaves are alternate along the stems.
Flowers: Inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in spring — March through May. Not showy but nectar-rich and heavily visited by bees and other pollinators. The flowers attract large numbers of insects which in turn attract birds — Desert Hackberry is one of the most insect-productive shrubs in the lower Sonoran Desert.
Fruit: A small, fleshy drupe approximately 1/4 to 1/3 inch in diameter — bright orange when ripe, juicy, with a mealy flesh surrounding a crunchy calcareous stone. The fruit is sweet and tart — pleasant fresh. Ripens summer through fall, with fruits present on the plant from approximately July through November. Birds consume the fruit heavily and the plant is rarely found with abundant ripe fruit for long — birds are efficient harvesters.
Seed: Large relative to the fruit size — a hard, crunchy, calcareous stone that takes up most of the interior of the drupe. The flesh-to-seed ratio is low — most of what you pick up is seed. Ground into meal the seed is edible and nutritious.
Habitat: Foothills, mesas, canyons, washes, and rocky or gravelly slopes in the lower Sonoran Desert. Often conspicuous in and near ephemeral washes where seasonal moisture concentrates. Common on bajadas — the broad sloping plains at the base of desert mountain ranges. Occasionally forms dominant thickets.
Look-alike note: Netleaf Hackberry (Celtis reticulata) is a related species found at higher elevations — typically a small tree rather than a shrub, with larger leaves showing a distinctive netted vein pattern on the underside. Both are edible. Desert Hackberry's small size, dense spiny thicket form, and lower elevation habitat distinguish it from Netleaf Hackberry.
Where and When to Gather
Desert
Habitat: Desert washes, rocky and gravelly slopes, bajadas, mesas, and canyon edges in the lower Sonoran Desert. Common at 1,500 to 4,000 feet across the southern half of Arizona.
Elevation: 1,500 to 4,000 feet — most abundant in the lower Sonoran Desert and semidesert grassland zones.
Range in Arizona: Found in the southern half of the state — common in Pima, Pinal, Maricopa, Yavapai, Graham, Cochise, and Santa Cruz counties. Absent or rare in La Paz, Yuma, and Santa Cruz counties. Common along the Verde River corridor, the Apache Trail, Saguaro National Park, Ironwood Forest National Monument, and throughout the desert foothills of southeastern Arizona.
Also found: Texas, New Mexico, Florida, Baja California, Mexico, and Central and South America as far as central Argentina.
When to Gather:
Fruit: July through November — peak ripeness August through October. The orange color is the indicator — green fruit is unripe. Harvest promptly when ripe as birds consume the fruit quickly.
Seeds: From ripe or dried fruit — year-round from dried fruit if available.

Harvested Desert Hackberry at the corner of E Saddleridge Trail (FR 310 / Alamo Canyon Road) and N Reymert Road (FR 231) at 33.26896, -111.19417 near Superior, Arizona in the Tonto National Forest — January 11, 2026. The four of us ate on site — no processing, just fresh off the shrubs. The plants here are large and heavily productive with abundant fruit. This is Matthew's favorite forage plant. A reliable location worth returning to annually.
Also harvested at Apache Trail — Davis Wash, March 8, 2026 — the same visit documented in the Apache Trail Davis Wash bucket list entry.
Two confirmed Tonto National Forest gathering locations — both accessible as day trips from the Phoenix Valley. The January harvest at FR 310 / FR 231 is notable — Desert Hackberry fruit persists through winter on the plant, making it one of the few fresh wild fruits available in the Arizona desert in the cooler months.
How to Gather
Desert Hackberry fruit harvest requires patience and attention to timing — the fruit ripens unevenly on the plant and birds are efficient competitors. The thorny thicket also requires care during harvest.
Fruit:
Wear long sleeves — the paired thorns are sharp and the thicket is dense
Select fully orange, slightly soft fruit — avoid green or shriveled fruit
Pick individually by hand — the fruit detaches easily when ripe
Place in a cloth or paper bag — avoid crushing
The fruit is small with a large seed — harvest a generous quantity to have meaningful flesh to work with
Use fresh immediately or dry for storage
Dried fruit concentrates the flavor significantly
Seeds:
Remove flesh from ripe fruit — the flesh separates relatively easily from the hard stone
Dry the stones completely before grinding
Grind in a mortar and pestle or grain mill — the calcareous stone is hard and requires significant effort to grind
Ground seed meal is mildly flavored and nutritious — use in porridge and flatbread

Desert Hackberry fruit has a mealy, pleasant, sweet-tart flavor — similar to a mild date or dried cherry with a hint of tartness. The large calcareous seed takes up most of the fruit's volume — the flesh-to-seed ratio is low, which means you need to pick a lot of fruit to have enough flesh to work with meaningfully. Despite this, the fruit is genuinely pleasant eaten fresh off the plant as a trail snack.
Native American peoples ground the entire fruit — flesh and seed together — and ate it mixed with parched corn or fat. Grinding the seed along with the flesh produces a nutritious meal that makes better use of the fruit than eating the flesh alone.
Fresh fruit: Pick ripe orange fruit and eat directly — mild, slightly sweet and tart, the crunchy seed a textural contrast to the soft flesh. A pleasant trail food in desert hackberry country.
Dried fruit: Dry ripe fruit on a screen until completely desiccated. The flesh shrinks significantly but the flavor concentrates. Dried hackberries can be ground with the seed into meal or rehydrated in water for cooking.
Ground seed meal: Ground dried hackberry — flesh and seed together — into a coarse meal. Mix with other ground seeds, dried fruit, or fat for a traditional Southwest trail food. Nutritious and calorie-dense.
Medicinal Uses
Desert Hackberry has limited but documented medicinal uses — primarily as an astringent and nutritive food medicine rather than a specific therapeutic agent.
Nutritive: The fruit provides carbohydrates, calcium from the calcareous seed, and antioxidant compounds from the orange pigment — carotenoids similar to those in other orange fruits. Regular consumption as a seasonal food contributes to nutritional health in the traditional food medicine sense.
Astringent: The bark and leaves have astringent properties from tannin content — a decoction of bark used topically for skin irritation and wounds in some traditional applications.
Wildlife Medicine Value: Desert Hackberry's most significant medicinal role in the desert ecosystem is as a larval host plant for multiple butterfly species — Hackberry Emperor, Texan Emperor, Dusky Emperor, Silver Emperor, and American Snout Butterfly all depend on Desert Hackberry as their larval food plant. Native American Uses

O'odham: Fruit eaten fresh and dried. The dense thickets used as natural windbreaks and protective enclosures around camps.

Trail food — fresh:
Harvest ripe orange fruit from the plant
Eat directly — chew carefully around the hard seed or spit it out
The seed is edible ground but too hard to chew whole without risk of tooth damage
Best as a fresh snack while in the field
Dried Hackberry Meal:
Harvest ripe fruit — quantity is important given the low flesh-to-seed ratio
Spread on a drying screen in full sun — dry until completely desiccated, 3 to 5 days
Grind dried fruit including seed in a grain mill or heavy mortar and pestle
The ground meal has a mildly sweet, slightly gritty texture
